Chinese car maker BYD Co Ltd said on Tuesday that its net profit in 2011 fell by 44 percent from a year earlier due to fierce competition in the world’s largest auto market and a sharp fall in photovoltaic product prices.

Backed by U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett, BYD posted net profit of 1.4 billion yuan ($222 million) last year, down from 2.52 billion yuan in 2010, it said in a preliminary results statement filed to the Shenzhen stock exchange. Read more »

Beijing bans high-emission vehicles

Beijing has banished about 12,500 vehicles from other provinces from entering the city because they were deemed to have excessive emissions. About 1,000 drivers were also fined since the city launched a 24-hour inspection on exhaust emission earlier this month, says the city’s environment watchdog.

Volkswagen Sharan listed & priced in China

The Volkswagen Sharan has been listed on the China car market as an import. Price starts at 309.800 yuan and ends at 409.800 yuan. Power comes from a 2.0 TSI with 200hp and 280nm. The Sharan has to compete with cars such as the Buick GL8 and Honda Odyssey.

A hard battle because those cars are locally made and priced much lower. GL8: from 228.000 to 388.000 yuan, Odysee: from 229.800 yuan to 282.800 yuan. The Buick comes with a 3.0 V6 in top spec and is still cheaper than the Sharan.

A new China-only car. This is the Peugeot Cross 307, a kinda cool crossover-thingy based on the good old Peugeot 307 that is still made in China by the Dongfeng-PSA joint venture. Price is 97.800 yuan for the manual and 110.800 yuan for the automatic. The Cross 307 comes with black plastic around the wheels, grey plastic all around and a fancy roof-rack. Drunk Audi driver from China uses railway

One drunk Audi driver in the great city of Wuhan in Hubei province made a very big mess. He tried to drive his Audi A6L over the railway but after 100 meters the tires wore out and the car came to a halt. In the meantime two giant freight trains had to pull emergency stops to avoid the Audi and all railway traffic had to be suspended.

New spy shots from the upcoming Guangzhou Auto Trumpchi GS5 SUV. The final production version will debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, the ‘almost-ready concept’ debuted at the Guangzhou Auto Show in December last year. Real car loox for 99% the same, notable exceptions are the wheels and there seems to be some extra shiny chrome in the grill. The Trumpchi GS5 will be listed in late April, price will start around 110.000 yuan.
