A very lowriding Mercedes-Benz W220 S600, seen in the great city of Xiamen in Fujian Province by reader Pinut187, thank you for the pictures! The good limousine has been lowered by at least ten centimeters and almost eats the ground. Sadly, Pinut187 tells us the vehicle’s brake pads were rusty and rotten, indicating this great Benz didn’t make a ride for quite a while.

Strange indeed, which man who owns a car like this will leave it alone for long? I certainly would not! The Mercedes-Benz W220 S-Class was made from 1998 until 2005. The vehicle we have here is the very rare pre-facelift S600, which was only made in the model years 2001 and 2002. Power came from a 5.8 liter V12 with 362hp and 530nm.

The W220 was only the second Mercedes-Benz S-Class that was officially exported to China, after the W140. We got us a small collection:  stretched, low rider in Beijing, and matte black.

  1. If an S-Class has air-suspension (and this one probably has), the car will “kneel” after a period of non-activity. Fire her up, and the S-class isn’t a lowrider anymore 😉

  2. My S-class sinks after about a week parked, tho’ I’ve see some drive on the road with broken suspension – BAD idea !

  3. Saw one just like this earlier today in Changsha – sitting in the lowest level of an underground parking lot, covered in dust, and with clamps on two of the wheels. What I wouldn’t do to bust her out of that hole!

  4. The w220 S600 has Active Body Control. The V12 is too heavy to be suspended by air, so instead of the car having air suspension it has hydraulic suspension which uses hydraulic fluid in replacement of the air.

Now, everyone else is correct in terms of sagging. With air or hydraulic the car could just be rotten away or the car has lowered itself to save the suspension. Fire her up and she should rise, unless the hydraulic pump is bad which long periods of inactivity can do to them.

Just to add, the pre-facelift 600’s were trash. Not having turbos led the engine to internally fail because there was too much power going to waste and putting stress on the sensitive engine components. If anyone is to ever purchase a 600, go for the 2003 and above. It’ll save you tens of thousands of dollars in repairs.
