The Hawtai Shengdafei SUV will be launched on the China car market in September, featuring a giant and very impressive grille. Price will start around 70.000 yuan and end around 120.000 yuan. The Hawtai Shengdafei debuted with lots of flesh and fanfare on the 2014 Beijing Auto Show.

The Hawtai Shengdafei, or ‘Santa Fe’ in English, is the successor of the current Hawtai Shengdafei/Santa Fe, which is based on the first generation Hyundai Santa Fe. Hawtai and Hyundai had a joint venture from 2002 until 2010, making, among others, the Santa Fe. When the joint venture ended Hawtai continued making the Santa Fe on its own. Price of the current car starts at 89.700 yuan and ends at 99.700 yuan.

The new Shengdafei is still in part based on the Hyundai platform, but the engine, exterior, and interior are all new. Power comes from a 1.5 liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 135hp and 200nm, mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. A 2.0 turbo-diesel will be available for export and the countryside.

  1. Aside from exports to nearby North Korea, we don’t hear much about Hawtai exporting. Perhaps that’s why the Shengdafei, Baolige, and the alpha numeric models, don’t get names appropriate for the global market.
