Here we have a Hyundai Elantra riding the Jingkai Highway in Beijing. The car seems damaged to the max but is somehow still working. Not bad… The Elantra is made in China by the Beijing-Hyundai joint venture, price starts around 80.000 yuan. This one is worth, well, I guess you can still sell it in the countryside for some 5.000. This curious case reminds me of a certain truck.
Well, we told you so. This is the new Beijing-Hyundai Shouwang sedan. Shouwang is a sub-brand from the Beijing-Hyundai joint venture. The brand debuted with a flashy BHCD-1 concept car at the Guangzhou Auto Show in December. But sure that wasn’t the real thing. This is the real thing, as expected based on the current Beijing-Hyundai Elantra which will be replaced next year. An old platform for a new sub-brand yet again.

On the right of the back the name of the car seems visible, bigger:

The characters are ‘Shouwang’, the numbers look like ’5222′ but I am not sure, it seems a name too weird. But impossible it ain’t, it is a weird car and this whole sub-brand thing is even weirder.

Anyway and how. The Shouwang will be available with and old fashioned, and old, 1.4 patrol engine from the current Elantra. However, there will also be a pure EV variant. All we know now is that it will have a max speed of 120 km/h and a curb weight of 1440kg.

The Shouwang will debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April. It will be listed sometime in late 2012, but likely only with the patrol-engine, the EV will follow later and then still nobody will buy it, no matter how much subsidies the Chinese government is throwing at it. The most important reason: you can’t charge it, nowhere at all.

Here we have a very nice old pic from a very sexy lady on a police equipment show in China with a Hyundai Sonata police car. It is 2002 and the first China-made Sonata is just launched on the Chinese car market, based on the facelifted 4th generation model.

The Sonata was, and is, made in China by the Beijing-Hyundai joint venture. It was used as a police car in Beijing and surrounding cities from 2002 on but that didn’t last long, due to quality issues with the first batch of China-made cars most Sonata’s were soon replaced with Elantra’s.

Exactly the same thing happened with Beijing’s taxi fleet. I still can remember taxi drivers getting really pissed off when I asked them about their new Sonata-car. It broke down all the time, they said, and used far too much patrol! The taxi’s too were replaced with Elantra’s. Nowadays Sonata police cars and taxi’s are a rare thing to see.

Later on quality improved and this fourth-gen Sonata, first-gen for China, is actually still in production today, it is now called the Sonata MolnCa and produced in the same factory as the new 6th gen Sonata. The 5th gen Sonata that was made by Beijing-Hyundai as well died when the 6th came in, the 4th however seems here to stay.

Chinese car buyers, can choose between two Sonata’s, now, ain’t they lucky or what?

The new Hyundai Elantra, known as Avante in some markets, will be listed on the China car market in July next year, debut is expected at the April 2012 Beijing Auto Show. Whether it will be called ‘Elantra’ or something like ‘New Elantra’ is yet unsure, Hyundai might decide for ‘New’ because they still sell another two Elantra’s on the Chinese market which will continue even as the new one comes around, all are made in China by the Beijing-Hyundai joint venture.

The current Elantra is called ‘Elantra-Dongyua’, it still sells 18.000 a month. The last-gen Elantra is simply called ‘Elantra’ and still sells up to 10.000 a month. Hyundai would be crazy to kill all that monet. Engines for the new-new Elantra: 1.6 and 1.8, mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

Shouwang is the name of the new sub-brand from the Beijing-Hyundai joint venture. They will make cheap and green cars. This BHCD-1 is the first concept car from Shouwang, it is said to look like the next-gen Hyundai Equus which makes it kinda relevant.

Beijing-Hyundai managed to screw up the party by putting one half of the car completely in the dark. This reminds of another failed introduction of a sub-brand. BHCD-1 then; BH stands for Beijing-Hyundai. CD stands for a line of cars, 1 stands for the first car of that line of cars. The BHCD-1 is a hybrid but Beijing-Hyundai didn’t give any details. This means there is likely noting under that well-shaped bonnet.

Wanna see the back? Forget it! However fine the loox of this concept car, the real thing will likely look much worse and will likely be based on an old Hyundai Elantra. Sub-brands are a must in China these days, another weird idea from the Chinese government where automakers can’t say ‘no’ to but which they don’t really want. The first real Shouwang will probably have some ‘design-similarities’ with this BHCD-1, like a line around a headlight.

Press pic, here we have her ass, not bad at all…

‘

New logo and name.
