Baidu, BMW link up in China

Baidu Inc, China’s biggest search engine, will partner with BMW to provide search services in the German automobile maker’s vehicles, part of its drive to push search services onto more platforms.

The two companies agreed to develop and operate search products based on vehicles’ information systems, Baidu said in a statement on Monday. This means Baidu’s search services will go beyond personal computers, mobile phones and televisions and expand to automobiles.

BMW China sales up 61%

BMW sold a total of 122,000 vehicles in China in the first half of the year, an increase of 61 per cent on the same period last year. Demand for the carmaker’s vehicles is growing three times faster than the overall Chinese car market.

Second facility in Shenyang to be finished next year ‘in record time’

BEIJING – BMW Group recently announced it will almost double the investment in its new Shenyang factory to around 1 billion euros ($1.42 billion) to enable higher production and increased local content.

With its joint venture partner Brilliance Auto, the automaker started construction on the new plant in the capital of Liaoning province in the middle of last year. At the time the announced investment was 560 million euros ($795 million).

Spy Shot: next gen BMW 1-series seen Testing in China

The new BMW 1-series will be unveiled sometime this summer. One new 1 was seen testing in China, likely for adjustment of suspension settings for China’s rough roads. BMW has no plans to produce the 1-series locally yet.

BMW currently imports the 5-door hatch, coupe and convertible to China. The next-next all new 1-series however will likely be made in China by the Brilliance-BMW joint venture that makes the 3-series, 5-series and soon the X1.

The Brilliance A3 SUV is Not Dead yet

The Brilliance A3 SUV was scheduled to debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in May but did not appear, reportedly because of pressure from BMW. The Germans thought it looked too much like their own X1 SUV. Brilliance and BMW have a joint venture in China which makes the 3 and 5-series for the Chinese market. Brilliance however seems not to have given up on the A3, a new spy shot shows it testing again. The shape of the car doesn’t appear to have changed a bit. What BMW thinks of this is unclear, they likely don’t even know about it. Well.., here it is.

BMW-Brilliance New Energy Vehicle unveiled in Shanghai

The Brilliance-BMW joint venture unveiled their BMW-Brilliance New Energy Vehicle concept on Sunday, two days before the start of the Shanghai Auto Show. Otherwise nobody would have noticed.

The NEV is based on the long-wheelbase BMW 5 made by Brilliance-BMW. The car is called BMW-Brilliance because 99% of the technology comes from BMW, so their name goes first, jawohl.

It is a plug-in hybrid with a twin-scroll trubocharged patrol engine with 160kw and a 70kw electric motor. Range on full electric is 75km, with the petrol engine ‘range extender’ the range is 400km.

The BMW-Brilliance joint venture will bring a plug-in hybrid ‘New Energy Vehicle’ to the Shanghai Auto Show. The NEV is based on the China-made long wheelbase BMW 5-series. In pure electric mode it has a range of 60 to 75 kilometer, with the petrol engine ‘range extender’ the range grows to 450 kilometer.

China becomes BWM’s third largest market

China has become BMW Automobile’s third largest market in the world, selling 183,300 vehicles in 2010, up 85.3 percent. The company’s first and second largest markets, Germany and US, also saw catapulted sales, 267,716 and 266,500 units respectively. Via: GlobalTimes.
