Patent Applied: Toyota Prius G’s will be Made in China

Toyota has applied for patent on the new Toyota Prius G’s for the Chinese car market. The G’s is a strangely urban-cool named sporty Prius that is so far only destined for the Japanese market. China will get it too, likely as another try to get the young into hybrids.

These are the very first pictures of the China-made 3th-gen Toyota Prius, made by the FAW-Toyota joint venture. The Prius will be listed on the China car market in February. The 2nd-gen Prius was also made in China but it was far too expensive, sales were so low that Toyota canceled production. Toyota hopes that new tax-breaks for hybrids and EV’s will help to keep the price down and make sales better.
Toyota sales in China up 4% in 2011

Toyota Motor Corp, Asia’s largest automaker, said its vehicle sales in the Chinese mainland slowed last year after natural disasters in Asia disrupted production and the removal of tax breaks dented demand.
The Japan-based company said on Thursday that it sold 883,000 vehicles in the Chinese mainland last year, 4 percent more than the 846,000 units delivered a year earlier. The automaker is targeting sales to exceed 1 million units this year, it said.

Toyota Motor said on Thursday it aims to sell more than 1 million cars in China this year, growing over 10 percent from the previous year after sales rose 4 percent in 2011. The Japanese automaker sold about 883,000 cars in China in 2011.

The Toyota Prius is back in China. It is made by the FAW-Toyota joint venture and will be listed on the Chinese car market in February next year. The last-gen Prius was also made in China by FAW-Toyota but sales were so low that Toyota pulled the plug. They now, want to try again. Most parts, including the hybrid drive-train, will be imported straight from Japan and put together in the factory in Changchun where above pic was shot. Via: Autohome.

Toyota to produce hybrid vehicles in China by 2015

Toyota Motor Corp announced over the weekend that it will produce hybrid vehicles and key components in China in 2015 to cash in on the fledgling yet promising market for green cars.
“We’ve decided to develop vehicles equipped with hybrid powertrains that are made in China and will try to start production and sales at our Chinese joint ventures in 2015,” said Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s president.

Toyota Motor Corp, the second-largest Japanese automaker in China, may face declining sales in the country should government claims of faulty parts lead to recalls, Mizuno Credit Advisory said.
China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement on Aug 29 that malfunctioning brakes and broken drive shafts in Toyota vehicles led to accidents that “caused many casualties” in the first half.
