China Car History: the Hongqi CA 7220 EL1

This is the brilliant Hongqi CA 7220 EL1, a stretched version of the Hongqi CA 7220, which was based on the Audi 100 which was made in China by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture. FAW is also the owner of the Hongqi-brand (Red Flag). This particular car is very interesting because the CA 7220 EL1 was officially only made in 1997.
But the logo on the grille, a ’1′ in a circle, arrived in 1998, replacing the old ‘winged 1′. The logo on the wheels however is still the winged 1, meaning this must be a rather unique 1998 CA 7220 EL1. Hongqi in those days, wasn’t very precise with this sorta thing, and that makes the brand’s history even more interesting…
Spy Shots: new FAW-Besturn B70 testing in China

The first spy shots of the all-new FAW-Besturn B70 testing in China. The current B70 is now some 5 years old and has been facelifted twice. The new B70 will get a very sleek bodywork with a big dose of sportiness, especially around the C-pillar which makes the B70 almost look like a hatchback. The new B70 is expected to debut late next year.
The new Hongqi H7, a first look inside

The new Hongqi H7 debuted in April on the Beijing Auto Show. At the time however nobody was allowed to look inside, the four H7′s at the show had their doors locked and Hongqi-staff simply refused to open them. Fortunately I found a fine Hongqi H7 at a police equipment show in Beijing last week and this time the doors were wide open.
Introducing the still secret Hongqi 77X from China

We are very proud to introduce the Hongqi 77X, a still secret new car that will sit between the Hongqi H7 and the Hongqi L7. Design is again a mix of new and old with a typical Hongqi-grille, modern lights and a very strong and straight profile. Chief designer is a certain Wang Xiao.
Spotted in China: Hongqi CA 7180 A2E

This is the Hongqi (Red Flag) CA 7180 A2E, based on the Audi 100 that was made in China by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture. FAW, First Auto Works, is also the owner of the Hongqi-brand. Hongqi made a long range of Audi 100 based cars from the late 1980′s until the early 2000′s. This CA 7180 A2E is a late car, it was born in 2001 and continued until 2003.
Hongqi H7 will hit the Chinese car market in July

The new Hongqi H7 debuted last month at the Beijing Auto Show, it will be launched at the Chinese car market in July, price is expected to start around 280.000 yuan. The Hongqi H7 is based on the Toyota Crown made by the FAW-Toyota joint venture. There will be at least three engines: FAW’s own 2.0 turbo and Toyota’s 2.5 V5 and 3.0 V6.
Second Hand Car from China: the FAW-Huali Happy Messenger

This is the FAW-Huali Happy Messenger, based on the first generation Daihatsu Move. The Happy Messenger was produced under license from Daihatsu by FAW’s subsidiary Huali from 2003 until 2008. The Huali-brand was later renamed as ‘FAW-Jiaxing’. Jiaxing still exist today, they make all sorts of small MPV-like vehicles that continue to be very popular outside the major cities.
New Xiali N3 launched at te Chinese car market

The new Xiali N3 has been launched on the Chinese car market. It didn’t happen at the Beijing Auto Show last month but rather sneakingly at the very local Qingdao Auto Show in Shandong Province. Strangely Xiali only showed the sedan but announced pricing for both the sedan and hatchback. The Xiali N3 is made by Tianjin-FAW Automobile, a subsidiary of First Auto Works (FAW).
FAW R008 will be launched in China at year’s End

The new FAW R008 will be launched on the China car market near the end of this year, price is expected to start around 50.000 yuan. The R008 is based in the Xiali N5 and will be made by Tianjin-FAW, a subsidiary of First Auto Works. The R008 will be positioned as a small ‘crossover’ model.
New FAW Weizhi V5 launched on the China car market

The FAW Weizhi V5 has been launched at the Chinese car market. Price starts at 52.900 yuan and ends at 59.900 yuan. The Weizhi V5 is a small sedan that sells at the very low end of the market. This sorta vehicles is nowadays very rare in the big cities but in the rest of the country they still sell like hot rice thanks to their low price, easy maintenance, low fuel consumption and general indestructibility.
