What a difference color can make. So far we’ve seen the Beijing Auto 007 SUV only in silver an thought it no great looker. In bright red though things improve, slightly. The 007 was listed earlier this month but I haven’t seen one on the road yet.

Price starts at 89.800 yuan and end at 128.000 yuan. Two engines: 2.0 with 121hp and 176nm and a 2.4 with 142hp and 217nm. Both engines mated to a 5-speed manual, no automatic available yet. Size: 4595×1828×1804, wheelbase is 2600.

The 007 is actually branded as BAW, Beijing Auto Works, just like the S12. BAW is a brand from BAIC, Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation. ‘Beijing Auto’ is another brand from BAIC, they bought the old Saabs and make the Benz B-copy. These names are confusing indeed and so most Chinese just call the company with all of its products and brands simply ‘BeiQi’, an abbreviation of Beijing Qiche which means Beijing Auto.

The 007 is based on a slightly modernized variant of the very ancient Beijing-Jeep Cherokee platform. Beijing Auto got the platform after the Beijing-Chrysler (earlier called Beijing-Jeep) joint venture went down.

The Beijing Auto (BeiQi in Chinese) 007 SUV debuted at the Beijing Auto Show in April. After that, not much. The suv was to hit the market in September but it didn’t. Suddenly, in early November test pics from a desert proved 007 was still alive. And here it is again, pictured at a photoshoot near the factory in Beijing. Got news on the engines, more details, but it ain’t good…

The 007 is 4-wheel drive, weight is around 1700kg. Engines: a 2.0 with 121hp and 180nm. That is not enough, the 007 will not be quick. The 2.4 is a very little bit better: 142hp and 217nm. The 2.0 is a new sort of in house design.

The 2.4 is still based on the ancient 2.5 4-cilinder that powered the Beijing-Jeep Cherokee. That is an original American design dating back to the seventies. Great choice than Beijing Auto! But, the 007 will likely be very cheap, price to start around 70.000 yuan and that makes up for a couple of hp, does it not?

Look at that gearlever, just like on a tractor and actually much worse than in the Cherokee. Plastics look nice, like plastics.

The Beijing Auto (BeiQi in Chinese) 007 SUV debuted at the Beijing Auto Show in April. The not so pretty machine was to hit the market in September but nothing was seen or heard of it anymore. Util this week that is, two 007′s were seen driven on Kunlun-Pass, a remote and extremely hot area in China’s Guangxi province.

The 007 is now sceduled to be on sale somewhere early next year so Beijing Auto’s engineers have time to fit bigger wheels. Engines: a 2.0 with 89kw and 176nm, and a 2.4 with 105kw and 217nm. The 2.4 comes with 4×2 or 4×4, the 2.0 only with 4×2. Both engines mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto. Size: 4595×1828×1804, wheelbase is 2600. Price yet unknown but will likely start around 100.000 yuan.

In the same convoy this Beijing Auto Qishi, it will get a small facelift early next year. The Qishi indeed is based on the good old Cherokee. The Cherokee was made in China bij a joint venture from Beijing Auto and American Motors, later owned by Chrysler. The joint venture, called Beijing-Jeep, made the Cherokee for two decades. After Chrysler pulled out Beijing Auto soldiered on alone, Chryler didn’t mind and so it is still here. Price starts around 80.000 yuan for a 2.2 four.

Current car.

My very own 1998 Beijing-Jeep Cherokee. Drove thousands of km but still just 75.000 on the clock. 2.4 four, not too much hp but a lot of torque. Great car, I love her and we’ll never part…

Beijing Auto brought a lot of new cars to the Beijing Auto Show. One of those the B40 which originally debuted at the Beijing Auto Show in 2008. Two years later the B40 looked ready for production but apparently was not.

Its introduction date is postponed to the first half of 2011, exact date unknown but it certainly won’t be available until the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show (April 20-28). Price for the B40 will range from 100.000 to 150.000 rmb. Engine is the ancient 2.4 with 105kw and 217nm

The new 007 looked very much not-production ready but will hit la market this September. Price ranges between 90.000 and 130.000 rmb. Engines: the same 2.4 as the B40 plus a 2.0 with 89kw and 176nm.

BAW revealed the 007 medium-suv today at the Beijing Auto Show. The car is supposed to be ready for production but the one and only 007 on the stand certanly was not. Especially the interior showed it was far from a finished automobile. Still, BAW handed out a leaflet that describes the 007 as a car one can buy today. My guess is it will take a while before one really can.

See those backed out windows, they are black for a reason. See the panel gaps around the doors and bonnet. The following info is from the leaflet: size: 4595x1828x1804, wheelbase is 2600. Engine: 2.4 litre patrol, 105kw@4800 and 217@3000-4000nm. Weight: 1655 for the 2wd and 1790 for the 4wd. No one could tell me the price but usually this kind of a vehicle will do around 100.000 for the base model.

BAW staff didn’t like me taking pictures of the interior, after me and one other photographer took some shots a staff member locked the doors. One by one.

Back into secrecy again it goes.

BAW (Beijing Auto Works, Beiqi) will bring a new medium sized suv to the Beijing Auto Show. The 007 will debut on Saturday April 24. Engines: 2.0 and 2.4 litre petrol, both four-cylinders. The picture above is the first official picture from BAW that leaked out just a few days to early. Car loox good; trendy, suvy and roofrails. Picture is taken from a roadside poster somewhere near the exhibition center. Usually these are covered until the start of the show. Someone forgot.

This is the new SUV from BAW, that’s Beijing Auto Works, aka Beiqi. The new machine loox just like the car we saw in a spyshot yesterday. Engines are 2.0 and 2.4 litre four cilinders.

Just checked BAW’s website and there it is, name confirmed, 007 indeed:

It will debut at April 24th, that’s the second press day of the Beijing Auto Show. Just yesterday, I got my TheTycho.com press card so live shots on that day on this site.

Acoording to a press release, unfortunately yet without pictures, about the 007 on BAW’s website the 007′s competitors are: Hyundai iX35, Honda CRV, Rely X5 and Emgrand EX7. The price of those vehicles starts around 150.000 rmb, 007 will be in the same territory.

Yesterday we saw a very old picture of what some Chinese websites said was the new BAW (Beijing Auto Works aka Beiqi) 007 suv. We had our doubts and those today seem right with another picture of what could be the new BAW 007. It shows a partly camfouflaged car with the BAW-logo on a modern front. It isn’t the old Jeep and it isn’t the new B40 because that one has only two doors.

There is only one strange thing with this picture: the steering wheel is on the wrong side. Could be mirrored, the characters on the numberplate are from some Chinese website and added later. Maybe BAW plans to export it to some country where one drives on the left, like England.

Rumors also say BAW will show two concept cars based on the Saab 9-3 and (old) 9-5 platforms they bought from GM before Spyker got the rest.
