Facelifted Roewe 550 hits the China car market

The facelifted Roewe 550 has been launched on the Chinese car market. Price starts at 118.800 yuan and ends at 182.800 yuan. The facelift included a new grille, new head lights, new rear lights, new bumpers, and an updated interior. The facelifted Roewe 550 debuted last month on the Shanghai Auto Show. The facelifted Roewe 550 is available with two engines: 1.8 with 133hp and 1.8 turbo with 160hp. Gearbox: 5-speed manual or a 6-speed DCT that was developed with GM.

The facelifted Roewe 550 sedan will be launched on the Chinese car market on May 4, priced from around 100.000 yuan to 190.000 yuan. The facelifted Roewe 550 debuted on last month’s Shanghai Auto Show after much delay, the earliest spy shots of the facelifted car were seen in November 2011.

The facelifted Roewe 550 debuted on the Shanghai Auto Show in near-total darkness. What is, Roewe trying to hide? The facelift has done well to the old 550, making sure it can continue at least another two years. Biggest changes are up front with a new grille, headlights and bumper.

This must have been a very painful birth. We saw the very first spy shots of the facelifted Roewe 550 in… November 2011. Since then we have seen various prototypes testing around, including a completely-ready example in the Shanghai subway.
But no matter how many test cars we saw, the facelifted Roewe 550 never made it to the Chinese car market yet. The latest we saw were the patent drawings which appeared in January of this very year. Chinese media now report the facelifted Roewe 550 will finally debut on the Shanghai Auto Show that starts next week. Hurray.

Roewe has applied for patent for the facelifted Roewe 550. The new design however was no secret, we have seen the facelifted Roewe 550 all-naked several times, Roewe has been working on this relatively small facelift for more than a year now, begging the question; where is the car?

New spy shots show a Roewe 550 with a DCT, it will be mated to the 1.8 turbo that poops out 160hp and 215nm. Chinese media say the 550 DCT will be available before the end of this year. The same media are however a bit confused about which 550 will get the DCT first.

New spy shots of the Roewe 550 plug-in hybrid, it has been in development for some two years but will finally hit the Chinese car market late this year. The car on pics is a test mule based around the facelifted 550 which will be launched in September. On earlier spy shots we saw a 550 hybrid based around the current car, indicating development took longer than expected.

New spy shots from the Roewe 550 Hybrid testing in China. Roewe showed a 550 Hybrid at the Shanghai Auto Show in April last year. By the time they said it would be listed on the Chinese car market in early 2012. Chinese media now report that 550 Hybrid will indeed be listed soon after the Beijing Auto Show in April. The 550 on the pics however is the old 550 and not the facelifted 550 that will also debut in Beijing.
