The current Roewe 750 is based on the ancient Rover 75. The new 750 will be based on the made-in-China Buick Lacrosse. Earlier we saw renderings from the new 750 that looked like a Lacrosse with different badged. According to these very first spy pics Roewe does try a little bit harder to make their new top car look special.

Shanghai Auto Industry Corporation (SAIC) has a joint venture with GM, Shanghai-GM, which among other cars makes the Lacrosse. SAIC is also the owner of the Roewe and MG brands. GM sells Roewe the platform not too make money, not because they like Roewe, not because they love competition, bu because they have to. By contract, the joint venture contract.

If GM doesn’t give platforms and engines the Chinese will simply kick ‘m out. That’s why Mazda gives tech to FAW, Volkswagen to FAW, a load of carmakers to Chang’an, PSA to Dongfeng, Honda to Guangzhou Auto and so the list goes on. Nice for the Chinese automakers who don’t have to develop everything by themselves. But it makes ‘m lazy as well, look what FAW, SAIC and Dongfeng make under their own brand names…
