Beijing Auto once again brought the B40, B40V and B70V to the Beijing Auto Show. The B40 and B40V first appeared at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show, the B70 at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show. Beijing Auto says the B40 and B70 are now production ready and that they will be listed on the China car market this year.

The B40 is a 3-door sporty SUV, Beijing Auto is aiming at cool ‘n young people who go to the mountains in the weekend. A whole new target-group for the company, its current line of 4×4′s are mostly bought by government agencies of all kind. Power for all B’s comes from two rusty engines: 2.0 with 122hp or a 2.4 with 155hp. That indeed seems barely enough to push a big car like the B40 over the highway, let alone a mountain.

This is the B40V. A concept based on the B40. Production seems uncertain but Beijing Auto said they might just do it, sometime in the future after the standard B40 and B70 are safely launched.

This would make a fine military vehicle as well but as far as I know the PLA hasn’t ordered any yet.

The B70V is the five-door version of the B40. A huge car. Close inspection of the B’s learned that quality is good enough. Big question is price, Beijing Auto doesn’t say anything about it. Big car, old engines, old platform, tip top, can’t be more than a starting price from some 150.000 yuan for the B40.

The Beijing Auto B40 and B70 will be listed on the Chinese car market in September, the final production cars will debut at the Beijing Auto Show next month. Power will come from a 2.0 with 122hp and 180nm, or a 2.4 with 142hp and 217nm. Low output indeed, both engines are rather old. Both engines also power the Beijing Auto Qishi S12 which is a continuation of the good old Beijing-Jeep Cherokee. Price for the B40 will start around 130.000 yuan, the B70 around 160.000 yuan.

The production version of the Beijing Auto Works (BAW) B40 debuted at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show but has still not been listed on the Chinese auto market. Question is, or was, why? Many thought it had to do with the engine, an ancient 2.4, left over from the Beijing-Jeep joint venture days. This indeed seems to be the reason, BAW wanted to fit a better engine. And the new baby is: the Saab 2.0 turbo that Beijing Auto bought in 2009.

The differences are: the 2.4 has 141hp and 217nm, the Saab 2.0 turbo has 173hp and 265nm. Furthermore, the Saab unit is cleaner, more fuel efficient and more reliable. It is however more expensive so BAW might offer both engines in the B40. The debut of the final production car is now expected at the April 2012 Beijing Auto Show, likely alongside the 4-door B70.

Beijing Auto brought a lot of new cars to the Beijing Auto Show. One of those the B40 which originally debuted at the Beijing Auto Show in 2008. Two years later the B40 looked ready for production but apparently was not.

Its introduction date is postponed to the first half of 2011, exact date unknown but it certainly won’t be available until the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show (April 20-28). Price for the B40 will range from 100.000 to 150.000 rmb. Engine is the ancient 2.4 with 105kw and 217nm

The new 007 looked very much not-production ready but will hit la market this September. Price ranges between 90.000 and 130.000 rmb. Engines: the same 2.4 as the B40 plus a 2.0 with 89kw and 176nm.

BAW’s new B40 will hit la market soon and to spice things up a bit BAW brought this ‘Special’ as well. It is a concept so far but with enough liking they might actually built it. The special is a roughed up version of the normal B40 with a winch and without real doors.

Size: 4350×1843×1837, wheelbase is 2450. Engine an ancient 2.4 with 105kw@4800nm and 217nm@3500nm. Weight is 1850 kilo. Price of the normal car starts around 200.000 rmb, if BAW decides to go ahead with the special it will likely cost a 30.000 more.

The Breast B40 is meant for young cool hip urban modern people without too many children, ain’t that an easy sell in China, who like to go wild in the mountains in the weekend. Size: 4350x1843x1837, wheelbase is 2450. Engine an ancient 2.4 that was originally designed by Jeep in the ’70′s. China still makes ‘m!, but a bit modernized. 105kw@4800nm and 217nm@3500nm. Weight is 1850 kilo. Price will start around 100.000 rmb.

The B40 comes it two: a ‘Classic’ edition and a more luxurious ‘Limited’ edition. The lines are beautiful, I especially like those strong headlights.

It took BAW (Beijing Auto Works, Beiqi) two years to get the 2008 concept in production. The B40 will debut at the Beijing Auto Show next Friday. The name stayed, as did all the concept’s lines. The B40 loox like a modern interpretation of the ancient Jeep Wrangler, Jeep once was in a joint venture with BAW, called ‘Beijing-Jeep’. However, they didn’t make the Wrangler.

The B40′s design is very likable and it’s two-doors-only make sure it almost has no competition. There might be a reason for that; who will buy it? Still very brave of BAW to bring this wonderfull machine to the world. Engines likely 2.0 and 2.4 petrols.

Beijing Auto Works, or BAW, usually simply called ‘Beijing’ or ‘Beiqi’, showed a prototype B40 at the Beijing auto Show 2008. Two years later BAW will release the production car at the Beijing Auto Show 2010. The 3-door B40 is based on the good old Cherokee which BAW used to make in a joint venture with Chrysler. BAW is still building that one, now on their own and called the Qishi.

Size: 4200 × 1800 × 1750mm, wheelbase 2400mm, that is almost as big as the Cherokee. I got one of those myself and while nog exactly small it is not big by today’s standards. Biggest problem though is the engine. BAW will use the ancient 2.4 litre 4-cilinder that is also powering my 1998 car. It has 105kw@5000rpm and 217nm@3000-4000rpm.

That is fast enough in my 1998 because that car doesn’t have anything heavy on board such as electric windows or abs. The new B40 will have all that and so the weight will rise a lot. The new B40 might be fast enough to get the kid from school but that’ll be about it. Anyway, Cars are Fashion, no mother cars it can’t get up to the Great Wall.

Later, but is it too late?, BAW could use one of their newly bought Saab-powerplants in the B40, though nothing is sure about that one right now.
