A while ago I was honored with an invitation to visit the Hongqi ‘Red Flag’ factory museum, located in the FAW headquarters in the great city of Changchun in Jilin Province. The museum is open on invitation only so getting in is very hard. I had been dreaming about the museum for years and last month it was finally my time. Thanks to everyone who made it possible.

The brilliant Dalian Classic Car Museum has been closed. The private owner is in prison for killing his brother and won’t get out anymore.
The collection has been removed from the museum’s buildings and the cars are being sold off. Some are ending up in other museums and some with other collectors.
It seems very unlikely the collection will ever come together again. Time thus for a look-back at how things once were when all was good and happy. Today we start with the Hongqi limousines, the museum had six of them. On the left and right a Hongqi CA630 minibus.

Today in China Car History one of the most beautiful cars in the world. This is the mighty 1959 Hongqi CA72 Parade Car, seen in the Sanhe Classic Car Museum in the great city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province. The Hongqi CA72 Parade Car was based on the equally mighty Hongqi CA72 sedan.
Parade cars were, and still are, used to parade head-of-states and high ranking official through town during visits of inspection tours. The dignitary would wave to the crowd that was lined-up along the streets waving flags and showing happy faces.

An extremely rare Hongqi CA72 has been spotted in Romania, parked rather lonely on a quiet street in front of a Dacia pickup truck. The Hongqi CA72 was made from 1959 until 1965. In 6 years only 198 cars were made, making the CA72 one of the rarest Hongqi’s. We only met two examples in China, both safely stored in museums.

A fantastic Hongqi CA72 state limousine, seen in the Shanghai Car Museum where it was prominently displayed in the central hall, and so it should be! The CA72 was made from 1959 until 1965 when it was replaced by the much better known Hongqi CA770. In 6 years only 198 vehicles were made, making the CA72 one of the rarest Hongqi branded cars.

Here we have a very rare and extremely beautiful Hongqi CA 72 state limousine, seen in the secret garage of the Sanhe Classic Car Museum in the great city of Chengdu. The CA 72 was made from 1959 until 1965 when it was replaced by the much better known Hongqi CA770. In 6 years only 198 vehicles were made, making this one of the rarest Hongqi’s of all. Hongqi (Red Flag) also made four parade cars based on the CA 72, bringing the total production number to 202.
