Chengdu Auto Show: Joel Ewanick was Right about Football
Published on September 3, 2012 by Tycho de Feyter
Back in July all automotive media got red hot about the unexpected and very sudden firing of Joel Ewanick, marketing chief of General Motors. Why exactly he was kicked out remains unclear untill today but rumors say the reason was likely his very expensive soccer deal with Manchester United. GM however signed the deal anyway and new pictures from the Chengdu Auto Show prove Joel was right. A local Chengdu Chevrolet dealer hit the floor with a yellow Chevrolet Camaro with a giant Manchester United sticker on the bonnet.
The Camaro is very popular in China: check! Soccer is very popular in China: check! Manchester United is by far the most famous football club in China: check! China is the biggest auto market in the world and GM is big out here: check! All good, what are the bean counters wining about?! Sure this was just an idea of this particular dealer, but me guess GM should take note.
